Topographical Skills Test

What is the Topographical Skills Assesment?

If you are a first time PCO-Licence applicant, you will need to meet the required standards in demonstrating topographical skills. This is a pre-requisite for all applicants, although there are some exemptions detailed below.

The Topographical Skills Assessment checks your ability to use a London A-Z and a Great Britain road atlas.

At PCO-Licence London, we provide bespoke training packages to fully support all applicants wanting to become a minicab driver (Private Hire Driver) in London.

What is the Assessment Structure?

The Assessment is structured in 5 Modules. As a pre-requisite, all applicants must be able to speak, read and understand English. This a written test that is conducted in English.

  • Map-reading skills
  • Identifying points of interest using a map
  • Route planning and navigational skills
  • Directional skills
  • Road signs and driver responsibilities

Who is Exempt?

If you meet any one of the criteria listed below, you will be regarded as having already satisfied the Topographical Skills requirement and will be exempt from taking the test:

  • Previously licensed London Private Hire Vehicle drivers who have already passed a TfL Topographical Skills Assessment
  • Licenced London taxi drivers  – both all London and Suburban
  • Professional London tourist guide (e.g. Blue Badge Driver Guide)
  • An individual who can provide TfL with evidence of a relevant vocational qualification in passenger transport (e.g. NVQ or equivalent)​
